Traffic collisions are caused by 3 factors. (1) Environmental Factors, (2) Human Factors, (3) Mechanical Factors. We at SRI routinely find that the mechanical component of traffic collisions is overlooked by investigators. It is rare that vehicles are inspected by mechanics and even more rare that the wheel and brake systems are taken apart and inspected. Over the course of the last year SRI has been involved in 6 separate collisions where mechanical issues were largely the contributing factor of the collision if not entirely the cause. This morning Joseph Stidham witnessed this brake rotor being pulled off of a vehicle. This exemplifies the need for detailed vehicle inspections in traffic collisions.
