Over the past several months SRI assisted Jerry Cox Esq. and Jim Cox Esq. to defend Dwight Hughes against the charges of Murder and Assault in the 1st degree. With the help of SRI’s crime scene reconstruction team and the physical evidence, Mr. Hughes was found not guilty on Friday, March 18, 2016 on all counts against him. Many are concerned and troubled about how and why Mr. Hughes was charged for a crime he didn’t commit.
With the help of SRI’s crime scene expert reviewing the evidence and providing proper interpretation, Mr. Jerry Cox and Jim Cox were able to prove that Mr. Hughes was not the shooter. The most compelling evidence proving Mr. Hughes did not commit this crime included:
- The police at the scene of this crime found several shoe prints that were size 12 but Mr. Hughes wears a size 10.
- A shot gun shell found at the scene and believed to be the shell responsible for the crime was a size that could not be fired from the only gun that Mr. Hughes owned or possessed.
- A pair of glasses found at the scene of the crime which were believed to be Mr. Hughes by the police until DNA testing was completed which revealed that Mr. Hughes DNA was not present on them; however another unidentified persons DNA was identified on them.
However, the Kentucky Attorney General’s office, Kentucky State Police, and the Clay County Sheriff’s department would not relent in their prosecution. Sadly the families of these victims were lead to believe that Mr. Hughes was the shooter without a single piece of evidence to prove their theory. After this jury verdict, SRI hopes that the police run the unidentified DNA profile found on the glasses through all known data bases and begin a diligent search for the person responsible for this crime. Further investigation is needed to find the true shooter. We wish all parties involved in this case the best and send our sincere condolences to the victims and their families.
The very foundation of SRI is to “FIND THE TRUTH”. Their is nothing more rewarding than seeing our hard work pay off and the TRUTH be brought to light. We are here to help.
