In rural area of Kentucky our roads are so poorly marked that seeing the road at night while it is raining is almost impossible. This is an example of an environmental factor that causes traffic collisions. On September 11th of 2017, I was traveling across the Hal Roger Parkway late at night while it was raining. There was no traffic on the road so I was able to stop safely and take the following picture.
This road had recently been resurfaced and the lineage was freshly painted. As you can see, the rain, mixed with low lighting could make any driver confused on their path. Autonomous car operators beware.
