At Stidham Reconstruction & Investigation, we work numerous cases with area attorneys that involve trucking companies. When working these cases, it is important to be aware of a beneficial program provided by The Federal Motor Carrier Association (FMCSA). The program is called the Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP) and it allows trucking companies to check the status of their drivers, thus allowing for more informed hiring decisions. The documents provided by this program can be very helpful during truck-related cases. The report will disclose a drivers’ 5 year crash history as well as their 3 year inspection and violation history. This information can help to identify potentially unsafe drivers, assist in defending against negligent hiring litigation and could help make roads safer long term. According to a PSP safety impact analysis conducted by the FMCSA that compared motor carriers that used PSP to all other motor carriers, PSP is already making an impact. The results from the analysis showed that on average, motor carriers that used PSP lowered their crashes by 8% and their out-of-service rates by 17%.
